Tipping in Shimla is a norm like it is anywhere else in India and the world. Though there is no fixed rate or amount for tipping, places like restaurants and hotels expect that you leave some tip. High-end hotels and restaurants expect that you tip at least 10% of the bill, in case service charges are not added. For more information on how to tip in Simla, please read on further.

In hotels, you are expected to tip the maintenance staff, the bellhop (luggage carrier) and the person who brings you food in your room. In case you ask for extra services, you are expected to tip some amount for that also. While traveling, it is not customary to tip the cab driver. The amount can be rounded off and a small tip can be given if the services are exceptionally good. Also, if you are hiring a cab for an entire day, it is expected that you give a small tip. The people here are very friendly and even a small tip will be accepted with a generous “Thank You”.

Shimla uses the same electricity and voltage as any other state in India. The current in Shimla is around 240 volts, alternating at around 50 cycles per second. In case the devices you carry will not work on 240 volts, you can carry a voltage converter. If you are not carrying one, you can easily get it in any electrical appliance shop in Shimla. In Shimla, electricity and voltage is supplied to the entire city and the state by a state government owned body.

The types of plugs used in Shimla or anywhere in India are also different from the ones used in the West. Here in Shimla, the plugs that are used are the round pin variety instead of the flat pin variety that is used in western countries. It is advisable that you carry a combination plug adapter that would be adaptable anywhere in Shimla and would be of use even in a place where flat pin is used. You can get one easily in any electrical appliance shop in Shimla.

The climatic conditions of Simla are pleasant throughout the year. It is because of the favorable weather and climate of Shimla that tourists throng this hill station in any season. Though there is less of rush in monsoons, the rest of the year sees a steady inflow of tourists. In Shimla, weather and climate is prone to sudden changes as the high altitude results in sudden drop and rise in temperature. Read on further to know about Shimla weather in more detail.

Summer
Shimla has warm summers and the temperature never goes beyond 27o Celsius. The duration of summers in Shimla is from April to June. During this time, Shimla is overcrowded and packed with tourists, as temperature in the plains gets too high. The days are warm and the nights tend to get cooler. Thus, one is required to carry some light warm clothes for the nights. The variations in the diurnal range of temperature are starkly evident to anyone visiting the place. There is occasional rainfall during summers, though not too heavy.

Monsoons
Then come the monsoons that last from July to September. During monsoons, it is advisable not to visit Shimla, as the place is not too hospitable during rains. Monsoons are pretty heavy in Shimla. Being a hill station, there are too many instances of landslides occurring here. The temperature during monsoons drops considerably and ranges from 15o – 25o Celsius.

Winters
The temperature starts to drop here on and the monsoons cease to make way for winters. The cold and chilly winds from the higher ranges of the Himalayas lash the place and the temperatures can drop to sub-zero levels. The winters last from November to mid- February. The main attraction of winters is the snowfall that Shimla receives around the time of Christmas in December. Though transportation and accommodation is a bit of a problem during winters, yet tourists throng the place during December and January.

Getting a tourist guide in Shimla is not at all a problem. However, one must always exercise caution while dealing with Shimla tourist guides. Though these guides are dedicated professionals and trustworthy, it is always better be alert all the time. It is always better to hire a tourist guide while moving around and touring a new place. These guides are very helpful and have a knack for making your trip not just interesting but also memorable. Read on further for more information on tips for handling Simla guides.

Always hire a guide from a trusted travel agency. If you are staying in a hotel, ask the staff to arrange a guide for you.

Always fix the amount to be paid to the guide before embarking on the journey. This will avoid any confusion later on.

Avoid exhibiting too much cash and rolls of money in front of them. Do not disclose the amount of money you are carrying with you.

Keep your credit cards and other cash receipts with yourself and do not hand it over to them for any reason.

It is okay to mingle around freely with them but keep a distance between. Do not let dominate you or take you for granted.

When moving around with guides, try to carry minimal luggage with you. This is because moving around with them becomes easy as the responsibility of looking after luggage is not there.

Remember that you are paying them for their services. If not satisfied, ask them for more information and demand better services.

Pay them at the end of the day when you feel satisfied by their services. It is not mandatory to tip, though if the service has been exceptionally good, you may give them Rs.50 more than the amount decided before.

The first and foremost thing to be kept in mind while pondering about what to wear in Shimla is that the place can get chilly without warning. So pack some warm woolens like jackets and shawls. There is no dress code as such in Shimla that will give you an idea about how to dress up in Simla. You can wear just about anything in Shimla. To help you decide which clothes to wear in Shimla, we bring you information on what to wear in Shimla. Read on further for more information about the same.

Always pack clothes according to the number of days you are going to spend and the season you are going in. If you are going in summers, pack light and airy clothes with a couple of warm clothes for the nights. Do not forget to carry a strong pair of shoes for walking and strolling on the mountains. If you are traveling to Shimla in winters, take woolens that include sweaters, jackets, caps and socks. In Shimla, winters can get pretty harsh and thick sweaters and jackets are a necessity. Also, carry your sunglasses and sunscreen, as you never know when the sun might shine brightly!

The famous Bhimakali Temple in Shimla is a very popular tourist attraction. Also known as Bheemakali Temple of Simla, this architectural wonder is one of the representatives of 51 Shakti Peeths. The unique thing about this temple is that the style of architecture used to build it is a unique amalgamation of both Hinduism and Buddhism. It is built of wood and is no less than an architectural masterpiece. Located near the temple are the palaces of the royal families of Shimla.

The temple has an interesting story behind it. It is said that long ago, there were many demons in the Himalayas who were proving to be a major distraction when the priests and saints used to meditate. They all prayed to the Gods above to send a powerful force to wipe the demons off. Hearing their pleas, the Gods decided to concentrate their powers on one point. A huge explosion took place and one could see a small girl child on that spot. This girl child grew up to be the force who destroyed all demons and was supposed to take repeated births to destroy any evil force on the face of the earth. The temple is dedicated to this great female power who was called Bhimakali.

The temple also has interesting tit-bits that are truly intriguing. In the year 1905, a powerful earthquake struck this place and the temple tilted to one side. However, it reclined back to its original shape after another tremor jolted the place! People say that there is a secret tunnel inside the temple that was used to reach a nearby village by the priests. In the year 1927, another temple was built right next to the existing temple, which houses a 200-year-old idol of Goddess Bhimakali.
